I want my DTV

September 24th, 2008 at 05:55 pm

No, not MTV (for those that remember the song), but DTV, Digital Television. If you're crazy like me, and I don't have any cable or satellite service, you need to pick up a digital signal TV converter box. And of course you need to get the $40 vouchers for buying the darn little things.

I picked up one last night, and installed it on my TV. Well I found out you need a fairly good signal (though not great) to get digital TV. Turns out only 1 of 4 local network signals were strong enough, as well a 1 of the other 7 local channels (actually I think only 4 of them even have a DTV signal yet). It was certainly interesting. The two channels I did get were either crystal clear, or on occassion were pixelated (like when you lose a satellite signal). Even with that problem, the picture upgrade was amazing. Now if I can only figure out the right setting on the antenna to get the other channels...

Anywho, if you haven't gotten them yet, you need to go online and order the DTV vouchers. My converter box cost just $10 when I used one.

We hooked ours up a couple weeks ago, but I have yet to even turn on the TV to see how the channels look. Now I'm curious and might actually need to take break from work to go find out....

Ohhh... all the channels actually are coming in much better. Too bad there's still nothing on that I want to watch...

If you have a newer TV, you don't need to get the converter, right?

We haven't hook our up yet, since it'll just be old analog signal passing through the converter. Didn't realize that they already broadcast digital signal.

On another note - do you know you can watch TV online for free? (I might have posted this before - I just love this free TV thing and tell everyone!) I recommend www.hulu.com but if you are interested I have over 50 links to other free TV sites listed on my blog.

Oh, you're not crazy. I am dying for DTV too. HDTV for that matter! I'll settle for nothing less. And right now, I'm living with nothing. Haha. But maybe someday, maybe I'll be immersed in 1080p and Blu Ray. Maybe.

I ordered the DTV vouchers a while back and still haven't recevied anything. I'm still waiting so that I can get my converter boxes.

My understanding is that the TV must have a digital tuner to get the signals, and until recently many new TVs didn't have the tuner. Basically, I would say that if your TV doesn't specifically say it is digital ready, assume it can't use the digital signal.

As for TV on the internet, I need to get myself set up again with internet at home before I worry about that.

My vouchers took about 3 weeks to arrive. My guess is they keep the request list then send them all out once a month to save on costs, but its just a guess.
